CBD For Epilepsy

It has been shown that CBD helps with numerous health issues. One concerning disorder that can be managed with consuming CBD regularly is epilepsy.

How CBD Can Help Treat Epilepsy

I will be discussing in detail a study that explains how CBD can help with managing the symptoms of epilepsy and even help decrease the number of seizures. Keep reading and you will learn how 1 dose of CBD per day can keep the seizures at bay.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a disorder in which the brain experiences seizures. The seizures can be considered as a shut-down of the brain in order to protect itself, and even though this is not painful, they occur sporadically and the body has no control during a seizure. The seizures can happen if there’s a chemical imbalance in the brain, severe trauma, or by a stroke.

Modern medicine does not actually know what causes epileptic seizures, therefore cannot generate a cure. The only option available is a medication that helps with managing the seizures.

However, not all people with epilepsy respond well to this medication. They may experience severe side effects and the medication may be ineffective with lessening the number of seizures. This can be detrimental to one’s life.

CBD & Epilepsy

92 children and adults with this condition were used as a study group and were given CBD oil and were monitored to see if CBD could actually help relieve them from the seizures.

About 60% of the participants that have taken CBD oil regularly have reported a significant reduction in the number of seizures. Simply put, participants saw a 50% reduction in the number of seizures within a month.

When considering short-term use, CBD has been shown as an effective solution to reduce the seizures and greatly improve the quality of life. The scientists performing the study decided to continue long-term to observe how continuous use would affect people with the disorder.

After about 7 months of continuous use, around 1/3 of participants began to develop a tolerance for CBD and needed an increased dosage to achieve the same results. There was a 30% increase in the CBD dosage for some participants, while the others without the increased dosage experienced an increase in the number of epileptic seizures.

After increasing the dosage in 15 participants, 12 have shown improvement, while the other 3 did not experience any changes. The acquired tolerance to the CBD is known as a honeymoon effect and is common with many drugs. The initial results show an improvement and prolonged usage does not cause any more improvement to the condition.

This is a Ted Talk that covered the topic. A great video to watch if you have 20 minutes.

Concluding Thoughts

The initial results of the CBD therapy are favorable and the lessening of the number of seizures is an advantage. Even though the continuous use does not show an improvement in the number of seizures, CBD has proven to assist with pain management and health conditions overall, even if it’s temporarily. While the increased dosage helped tremendously with managing the symptoms, concerns regarding the continuous use of CBD oil and the long-term effects when managing epileptic seizures still remain.

While there are no known adverse effects from taking an increased dose of CBD oil, one can only wonder how much is enough.

My hope is that modern medicine will not overlook the result of the study mentioned and that they will continue to engage in creating an improved CBD-based medication that will provide long-term seizure relief. Because people with epilepsy have very limited medication options, any type of seizure relief is welcomed.
